Small and Medium-sized Enterprises (SMEs) account for 99% of all businesses in the EU, making them a vital factor in the economy.
An SME can be defined by either headcount or turnover, with less than 250 staff working for the company or less than 50 million euros turnover (or 43 million euros on the balance sheet). According to statistics from the Federation of Small Businesses, they account for 99.9% of UK business, and are responsible for 60% of all private sector employment. 2017 saw the UK playing host to a record 5.7 million private sector businesses, which was a rise of 3% in employing businesses since 2016, and 4% in non-employing businesses (ie businesses run solely by their owners).
They are, therefore, vital to the continuing health and growth of the economy. However, this can be a challenging role. According to research by RSA 55% of small and medium-sized enterprises don’t survive past their first five years. Problems such as regulation, an ever-changing market and most importantly the difficulty many find in obtaining funding, all play a part in painting this gloomy picture.
Of course anyone embarking on a new business venture knows that it will be, to some degree, a gamble, but there are thing that can be done to shorten the odds in their favour. Key among these is obtaining a reliable source of funding, whether that is in the form of start-up capital or the money required to expand premises or take on more staff.
